The fifty contestants in the Miss Teen Dream pageant thought this was going to be a fun trip to the beach, where they could parade in their state-appropriate costumes and compete in front of the cameras. But sadly, their airplane had another idea, crashing on a desert island and leaving the survivors stranded with little food, little water, and practically no eyeliner.
What's a beauty queen to do? Continue to practice for the talent portion of the program - or wrestle snakes to the ground? Get a perfect tan - or learn to run wild? And what should happen when the sexy pirates show up?
Welcome to the heart of non-exfoliated darkness. Your tour guide? None other than Libba Bray, the hilarious, sensational, Printz Award-winning author of A Great and Terrible Beauty and Going Bovine. The result is a novel that will make you laugh, make you think, and make you never see beauty the same way again.
Mrs. Beamer's Review:
I was hesitant to read this book because I didn't really enjoy Bray's A Great and Terrible Beauty...but I'm glad I did :) This is a silly, light, clean read. The book was funny...especially at the beginning. The sarcasm from The Company (the various ads, etc)... hilarious. I thought Bray did a good job creating multi-faceted characters within the realm of the pageant world, and enjoyed all of them. The book lost some momentum about 1/2 way through for me, but then picked up slightly toward the end.
My only concern with this book (for the YA audience) is they may not pick up on all the humor? Given Bray's witty and sharp sarcasm...I'm afraid some of it will be lost on the younger readers. BUT...I hope I'm wrong :) And...I'm certain all readers will enjoy the story. Great read!
My Favorite Quotes (from this book): " 'If I weren't about to be eaten by piranhas, I would tell you that I love you'." ~and~ "I love you for who you are, not for who the world thinks you should be."
