You Didn't Like the Book...Now What???

Hello fellow book blogging buddies :)  I am conflicted...and need the collective help of this incredible community.

What do you do when you DON'T like a book?  More specifically...when you don't like a REVIEW copy of a book?

I'm in a rut...haven't finished the last two books I started...just couldn't do it.  Below is what I did...but I'm wondering if it's the correct way to handle things?  What do you all do?  Help!!  :)

  • I do not give the book a rating
  • I mark the book as "read" and as "Did Not Finish"
  • My comments are " review"
  • I don't post a review
  • Essentially it's like I never read the book
  • I leave a comment saying I didn't finish the book, and therefore no review will follow
  • I don't post/tweet/list anything else about the book

***I think I'm comfortable with how I handle DNF books??  Decisive, I know :)  Thoughts??***

  • Rate with 1 or 2 stars
  • Leave review stating what I didn't like about the book
  • Post review stating what I didn't like about the book

PLEASE NOTE...this post isn't about leaving negative reviews.

It's about what YOU do/don't do when you don't like a book and/or don't finish a book.
I'd love to hear from you!!!

Thanks...and Happy Reading!!  ~Amie

  1. For DNFs....
    - I do post reviews on both goodreads & my blog. However, in no way are my reviews negative and I'm sure to state how far I got through the book, what I liked, and didn't like. When I post on goodreads, I don't give it a rating, but I mark it as "read" and "DNF" then post the same review from the blog.

    For 1-2 star reviews...
    - I'd say I do pretty much the same thing. I state what I did and didn't like, why it wasn't for me, and still try to tell my readers that "Hey, I didn't like it, but you might. Won't hurt to try it."

No matter what rating I give I always try to do two things: 1) never bash a book and 2) make it clear that not all books are for everyone and what I like may not but what they like.

    Hope this helps!

    1. Hi Doodle :) Thank you so much for commenting and letting readers know how you handle these books. And I agree with you...never bash a book, and encourage others to decide for themselves. I think I will start posting a brief review on DNF books...share my thoughts. Thanks again!!

  2. Personally if I DNF a book I don't rate it but I do leave some kind of review to vent out my frustrations, and just explain why I couldn't finish. 1/2 star reviews I treat the same as 4/5 star reviews. I'm honest first and foremost, but I alway make sure people know that its always personal so they may actually like it even if I didn't.

On a side note I think your blog is gorgeous!

    1. *blushing* over blog comment...thank you!! I'm definitely changing to writing something about WHY I didn't finish my DNFs. You make excellent points and I thank you for taking the time to comment :)

  3. For DNFs, like you, I usually mark them as read in goodreads and add them to a dnf shelf, but don't generally add a rating for them in goodreads. I haven't posted any DNF reviews on my blog - not because I'm against them, but simply because since I haven't finished the book, I don't have a whole lot to say.

I've considered doing something I've seen a couple other blogs do, which is once every few months they do a post where they will round up any books they DNF'd and just do a few lines on why it didn't catch their interest or if there was something that specifically turned them off. That way at least the book still gets mentioned.

    1. ooooooo....I love the idea of summarizing every few months the DNF books! Thank you for sharing that! I agree...I think the book deserves to get some mention on my blog...obviously something about it attracted me to it in the first I would hope others would like it, even though I didn't. And I'm liking the comments on what everyone does on Goodreads. Thanks for commenting!!

  4. Like you, I usually put then on a DNF shelf on Goodreads (I don't rate books either way :)) and note so on NetGalley/Edelweiss. I agree with a lot of what thefictionconniption said, too: I don't post DNF reviews on my blog simply because, having not finished the book, I find I don't really have a lot to say on it.
